Teacher Certification in Art Â鶹¹û¶³ PK-12

The Art Â鶹¹û¶³ program at Â鶹¹û¶³ empowers future educators to cultivate creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving in their students through the study inquiry based art education. By blending theory with four years of field experiences, students learn to create learner-centered, student-driven classrooms that foster a deep understanding of diverse learning needs. Our program emphasizes the importance of solid pedagogical approaches rooted in the PDE Visual Arts and Humanities Standards and National Core Art Standards.

Program Outcomes:

  • Develop inquiry based learner-centered art experiences that reflect a deep understanding of diverse student needs and effective pedagogical practices.
  • Cultivate the ability to create inclusive, collaborative, and creative classroom & community environments through art education.
  • Maintain a strong studio art practice to inform teaching methods and support professional growth as future art educators.

Art Â鶹¹û¶³ Minor (Non-Certification)

The Arts build community, foster collaboration, and support self-reflection and personal expression. The minor in Art Â鶹¹û¶³ offers the opportunity to explore the theory and practice of art education across the human lifespan—without pursuing PA K-12 certification. This interdisciplinary minor is ideal for students interested in careers as teaching artists and museum educators, in arts administration, pre-art therapy, human resources & training, health sciences, and fields where community, creativity, and education intersect.

Students will engage with the social, cultural, and developmental dimensions of art, examining how the arts can serve as a catalyst for inclusion, identity, and community connection. Coursework includes both art and education classes, with a strong emphasis on reflective practice and experiential learning.

Courses completed in the Art Â鶹¹û¶³ Minor may be applied toward a post-baccalaureate certification in Art Â鶹¹û¶³, should students decide to pursue PA K-12 certification in the future.

Students will take at least one course in drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, graphic design, or photography as part of this program. Note: Additional coursework in art may be needed to pursue a post-baccalaureate certificate in art education.
