Why This Field Matters

Substance use and mental health challenges continue to impact individuals, families, and communities at increasing rates. In the United States, more than 46 million people meet the criteria for a substance use disorder each year, yet only a small percentage receive specialized treatment. At the same time, rates of anxiety, depression, and trauma-related conditions continue to rise, with many individuals experiencing co-occurring mental health and substance use concerns.

  • Professionals in High-Demand: Employment for substance use, behavioral disorder, and mental health counselors is projected to grow 17%—much faster than average over the next decade, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
  • Expanded Access to Treatment: In Pennsylvania and across the country, communities continue to respond to the opioid crisis and broader substance use trends by expanding access to treatment, recovery services, and prevention efforts. This has created a critical need for professionals who are trained not only in mental health counseling but also in specialized substance use treatment, recovery systems, and co-occurring disorders.
  • Meaningful and Lasting Impact: Professionals in this field play a vital role in supporting recovery, reducing stigma, strengthening families, and improving overall community health. Through this program, students are prepared to make a meaningful and lasting impact in the lives of those they serve.

Curriculum

Build a strong foundation in the knowledge and skills needed to effectively assess, treat, and support individuals across all areas of substance abuse and behavioral healthcare. You’ll engage in partnerships with local and regional substance use treatment providers, community mental health agencies, healthcare systems, recovery organizations, and more. Moravian’s MSUC includes a core counseling curriculum combined with focus areas in:

  • Substance Use & Addictive Disorders
  • Evidence-Based Interventions
  • Co-Occurring Disorders Treatment
  • Trauma-Informed Care
  • Motivational Interviewing & CBT
  • Prevention, Policy & Ethics
  • Recovery & Relapse Prevention

Our curriculum is aligned with the Pennsylvania Certification Board and prepares students to pursue advanced substance use counseling credentials, including the Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CAADC). The CAADC uses the IC&RC Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor examination, connecting graduates to a widely recognized credentialing network. IC&RC member boards support credential reciprocity across many U.S. states, territories, military branches, and international jurisdictions. This can provide graduates with greater professional mobility if they choose to work beyond Pennsylvania.
