Philosophy Statement
Since its founding Ā鶹¹ū¶³ has been an innovative institution that has āpromoted well-being of students, sought to build healthy local communities, and dared to cross geographical and cultural boundariesā while maintaining an emphasis on mutual respect (Moravian, 2018). The occupational therapy program builds on these tenets by incorporating the fundamental beliefs and values of the occupational therapy profession. We view humans as occupational beings that require participation in personally meaningful and relevant occupations in order to achieve a state of health and well-being. This view is carried through in the education of future occupational therapists at Ā鶹¹ū¶³. A contemporary transformational learning approach focuses on complexity of learning and the relationship of learning to individual change, organizational change, social change, and global change (Taylor & Cranton, 2012). The occupational therapy program integrates the core values and perspectives of the occupational therapy profession, occupational science, the Moravian tradition, the liberal arts, and transformative learning in a program in which students are encouraged and supported to create knowledge, solve problems, and reflect upon their experiences through a process of examining, questioning, and revising self-perceptions.
